Jenn & Celia

Jennifer Staples, PhD

Co-Founder

I’m Jenn (she/her), a Clinical Psychologist, Adjunct professor, and co-founder of guts., where we’re on a mission to make mental health skills relatable, practical, and accessible for everyone. I’m a first generation college student and I earned my PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I learned mental health skills and strategies that I personally use every day. I’ve taught these skills in all kinds of settings, from classrooms to community groups, and I’ve seen firsthand how transformative they can be. I’m all about breaking down mental health stigma and bringing science-backed strategies out of the therapy room and into everyday life—where they belong! I’m also deeply committed to social justice and making mental health inclusive for everyone.

On a personal note, my own experience with anxiety, combined with a family history of mental health challenges and alcohol abuse, fuels my passion for mental health advocacy. I strive to share my story to combat stigma and help reduce feelings of shame.

Fun fact:

I’m a proud Vermonter who’s serious about her syrup. My family has been sugarmakers in the Northeast Kingdom of VT for generations, and you can usually find me carrying around a bottle of pure maple syrup, just in case!

Celia Hazard

Co-Founder

I’m Celia (she/her), a professional with a decade in graphic design, UX design, brand /business strategy. As a design scientist, I’m endlessly curious about life and human beings. I have a deep passion for understanding and am always striving for the fine balance of form and function. I don’t like accepting answers like, “That’s just the way it is.” I call bull shit on systems, processes, and social structures that don’t evolve. I actively place the mic in front of the unheard to ensure the future of design remains a dutiful practice for the good of humanity. I believe that great design and beautiful things should be accessible to all, not just those with big budgets or access and exposure.

On a personal note, my own experience navigating childhood divorce, abusive relationships, and facing racial discrimination in the workplace, has given me a clear understanding of how difficult life can be when we aren’t taught the tools and skills to overcome its challenges.

Personal Values:

Courage

Curiosity

Love

Intention

Integrity

Fun fact:

80% of what I own has been thrifted or is second-hand. It’s a slight obsession, but mainly a way of life. And yes, I’ll tell you the price of every item because it was probably a steal, which makes it all the more special.
